RV Insurance: What it is and Why it's Important

40.5 million Americans went camping at least once in 2016, and that number continues to grow. Stepping into nature and leaving the hustle and bustle of life back home is in many cases one’s idea of paradise! Your RV becomes your temporary home, and like any home, it needs protection.

What is RV Insurance?

Rockford Mutual’s RV coverage can help protect you and your RV from the unexpected. Our RV coverage was built to protect various types of recreational vehicles – including motor homes, campers and other types of trailers.

Your Personal Auto Policy will provide liability and medical payments coverages for accidents that may occur involving your RV, but adding RV insurance will provide comprehensive and collision coverage to help pay for damages to the RV and/or living facilities within the RV.

Why Do I Need RV Insurance?

Many mobile homes and campers come with a rather hefty price tag and without the proper insurance, you could get stuck paying out of pocket (or draining your savings) for the full cost of repairs to your RV (or someone else’s).

While less common, accidents involving campers and motor homes often cause devastating damages. RV coverage will help pay to repair your camper if it’s damaged in route to your camping destination.

Is RV Insurance Required?

Motor Homes

Due to the fact that motor homes are a self-propelled vehicles, they do typically require you obtain the liability limits required by your state.

Campers

RV insurance is optional for campers according to most state laws because they are towed behind a vehicle and not driven by themselves.

What types of coverage can I get for my RV?

Similar to your Personal Auto Policy, your RV coverage can be customized to fit your specific needs and budget. The type, size, age and value of your RV can determine the coverage that is best for you.

Generally, RV coverage is designed to provide the following protection:

  • Property damage to your RV – for example, collision with another vehicle or vandalism.
  • Property damage caused by your RV – for example, damage to another RV if your RV causes an accident.
  • Coverage for damages sustained from an uninsured/underinsured motorist.

Typically, the limits you carry on your Personal Auto Policy will carry through to your RV coverage. Your local Rockford Mutual Insurance Agent will help you understand your options and feel confident about how you’re protecting your investment.
