5 Signs of Hidden Water Damage in Your Home

Water damage can be a daunting and frustrating problem for some homeowners. While some causes of water damage are easy to spot and remedy, like a burst pipe or an overflowing sink, others, not so much.

Water damage that goes unnoticed can lead to thousands of dollars in damage and threaten the structural integrity of your home. Slow leaking roofs, a hidden leak in your basement, and even a dripping faucet can damage a structure over time. Are you suspicious of water damage in your home? There are several signs to watch for to determine if it’s time to call a professional:

1. Mold Growth

Visible mold is certainly a sign of a water issue. When the moisture level in a given space is high, mold will grow. Mold will often start in the seams of ceilings and floors where water or moisture is collecting.

For mild mold growth, you can remove the mold using different methods. For large mold outbreaks, a professional mold remediation company can find the source of the mold issue, remove it, and help prevent future mold issues.

2. Musty Odor

Must odors are typically caused by damp conditions and/or mold growth. A strong must smell can indicate a water issue even if mold is not clearly visible. The combination of darkness, poor air circulation, and moisture all contribute to the musty smell. It’s important to find the source of the built-up moisture before it causes further damage.

Don’t try to cover up the smell, it will just come back with a vengeance! Call a water damage expert instead.

3. Stains & Discoloration

Don’t ignore discoloration and stains on ceilings and drywall, as these are a sign of water damage. Stains and discoloration could indicate a leaky roof or leaking pipes behind drywall. If you find discolorations or stains, you should try to find the source of the moisture and call a professional to help.

4. Warped Floors, Walls and Ceilings

Water causes drywall, wood and other hard surfaces to buckle, bubble and warp. As they absorb water, they can become hazardous and unstable, threatening the structural integrity of your home. Your wooden floors may become extra creaky, or you may notice your ceiling starting to sag. These are severe warning signs that should be addressed immediately to keep your family safe.

5. Sudden Spike in Utility Bills

Keep an eye on your monthly water bill to find trends in usage. Some jumps are normal, particularly when spring gardens are planted or the first cold spell of the season hits. You know how much water you typically use or any projects planned that might increase your bill, such as power washing your siding, gardening, etc.

However, an unexpected spike could indicate a potential problem like a burst pipe or leaking faucet.

Water can enter your home quickly and discreetly. Knowing the signs of suspected water damage is one of the best ways to protect your home and your family from costly and dangerous repairs! Be sure to check our At Home blog entries for more information on waterproofing!
