Safeguard Your Property: Essential Lithium Battery Safety Tips for Policyholders

Lithium batteries power many of the devices and tools we rely on every day, from smartphones, smoke alarms, laptops, electric vehicles, e-bikes and more. These batteries store a large amount of energy in a small amount of space, and can be dangerous if handled incorrectly.

We hope to raise awareness and help our policyholders avoid any devastating losses caused by lithium-ion batteries.

Common Causes of Lithium-Ion Battery Fires

  • Overcharging or using the wrong charger
  • Physical damage or punctures to batteries
  • Exposure to high heat, extreme cold or direct sunlight
  • Manufacturing defects, including counterfeit batteries
  • Improper storage near combustible materials

Preventative Measures

GENERAL SAFETY PRECAUTIONS FOR ALL PROPERTY OWNERS

  • Use only manufacturer-approved chargers and batteries for your devices.
  • Charge batteries on non-flammable surfaces, away from paper, fabrics, or wood.
  • Store batteries in a cool, dry place—never in direct sunlight, near heaters, or in vehicles exposed to high temperatures.
  • Inspect batteries for swelling, leaks, or discoloration, which are signs of impending failure.
  • Dispose of old or damaged batteries at certified recycling centers. Never toss them into regular trash or burn them.

HOMEOWNER SPECIFIC RECCOMENDATIONS

  • Keep batteries and charging stations out of reach of children and pets.
  • Install smoke detectors in rooms where you regularly charge devices or store batteries.
  • Unplug chargers when not in use and avoid charging overnight.
  • Have a Class D or ABC fire extinguisher accessible, as water is not effective on lithium battery fires.

BUSINESS SPECIFIC RECCOMENDATIONS

  • Train employees on lithium battery handling, safe charging procedures, and emergency response for battery fires.
  • Maintain an organized storage protocol for large quantities of batteries; separate damaged or questionable batteries from the rest.
  • Develop and practice an emergency plan for battery-related fires, including evacuation routes and contact procedures for first responders.
  • Schedule regular inspections of battery backup systems and devices.

FARM SPECIFIC RECCOMENDATIONS

  • Safely store batteries used in farm tools, vehicles, and irrigation equipment away from flammable farm chemicals and hay.
  • Routinely inspect battery-powered machinery for wear, damage, or leakage, especially before charging.
  • Store replacement batteries in fireproof containers when possible.
  • Train farmhands in battery safety and fire protocol.

If a lithium battery fire occurs...

  • Evacuate the area immediately and call emergency services.
  • Do not use water to extinguish a lithium battery fire; use a Class D or ABC fire extinguisher.
  • Once safe, ventilate the area and report the incident to property managers or local authorities.
