Rockford Mutual Insurance Company Addresses Viral KIA Hyundai Tik Tok Challenge Responsible for Increasing Vehicle Thefts

Rockford Mutual Insurance Company (RMIC) is advising surrounding communities of a devastating and viral Tik Tok challenge responsible for increasing KIA and Hyundai vehicle thefts at an outstanding rate.

This challenge is a play by play for young adults on how to steal both KIA and Hyundai vehicles using only a USB charging cord. KIA and Hyundai models made from 2015 to 2022 have certain vulnerabilities that allow thieves to bypass the ignition. These automobile thefts are happening nationwide, and they are affecting customers of RMIC residing in Illinois, Wisconsin and Indiana.

According to CBS, vehicle thefts specific to Kia and Hyundai in Chicago, Illinois, are up a staggering 767% from last year. In Milwaukee, Wisconsin, more than two-thirds of vehicles stolen in 2021 were KIA or Hyundai models.

Some tips on how to protect these vehicles include:

  • Use a theft prevention tool, such as a steering wheel lock
  • Park in a garage, if possible, or well-lit areas
  • Keep doors locked at all times
  • Remove valuables from cars
  • Activate alarm systems

“We can only hope to do our part by making communities more aware of this situation”, said Kent Shantz, President & CEO at RMIC, “Please, take special care and safeguard your vehicle from thieves”.

Rockford Mutual recommends Kia and Hyundai owners contact the vehicle makers directly to inquire about theft prevention assistance, such as the supply of steering wheel locks.
