Letter from the President
Rockford Mutual Insurance Company (RMIC) was originally formed in 1896 to serve the insurance needs of residents of 10 counties in Illinois.The purpose of forming the company (then, Rockford Farmers’ District Mutual Tornado Insurance Company) was to take care of the farmers in the area.That same purpose exists today and is reflected in our motto Putting Lives Back Together.
RMIC presently operates in three states; our home state of Illinois, which is our largest state, Wisconsin and Indiana. At the present time, we are not actively planning to expand to additional states but at some point in the future, opportunities may present themselves to do so.
Over the years, we have grown to 76 associates, all working from our office in Rockford, Illinois with the exception of five marketing reps and several outside claim reps. We have also expanded our product offerings to include a large portfolio of products.
Our company is much like a large family. Almost half of our associates have been with the company 20 years or more and the majority over 10 years. We are 100% committed to the Independent Agency System and work hard to maintain strong relationships with our agents and CSR’s. We operate an in-house insurance agency to write the insurance for associates and to provide markets for agents to write business that is not eligible for the programs available at RMIC. The agency does not operate directly, but operates similar to a broker for our agents to utilize.
Another aspect of our company is to reinsure Farm and Town Mutual’s in Illinois and Wisconsin. Currently, we reinsure about 20 smaller companies. These smaller Mutual companies operate in rural communities and write farmowners and homeowners. They have long histories and strong ties to their communities. Because of their size, our mutual partners existence would cease without proper support from reinsurers. RMIC also provides products to our Mutual company policyholders that may not be offered by the Mutuals, such as automobile and or commercial coverage’s.
